e-peas – Dual Input Energy Harvesting (03/2024)

e-peas dual source energy harvesting IC solution AEM13920 is a versatile dual energy source input PMIC combining: very high efficiency MPP conversion from two independent harvester sources, flexible harvester combinations (among TEG, RF, Pulse, Photovoltaic), power flow measurement to and from storage element, dual configuration mode (GPIO and I2C) and 5 V direct storage charger.
This innovative architecture allows to harvest more energy from ambient space for demanding applications like wearable electronics, ESL, keyboards, RCU and smart complex sensors. The source boost converter cold starts from 275m V / 5 µW input making AEM13920 ideal for a wide range of energy harvesting sources. The application output regulator is programmable in a range of 0.6 V to 2.5 V.

Dual sources inputs:

  • Optimized boost operation for each source
  • Efficiency above 90% on each source
  • Harvests from 110 mV / 2 μW after cold start
  • Simultaneous harvesting from both sources

MPPT and constant voltage modes:

  • Both modes are available for both sources to ensure optimal harvesting from multiple combinations of harvesters (PV cells, RF, vibration, pulsed sources…)

Cold start from 275 mV / 5 μW input

  • Startup at ultra-low power from either harvesting source input

Selectable overdischarge and overcharge protection:

  • Supports various types of rechargeable batteries (LiC, Li-ion, LiPo, Li-ceramic pouch…)

Regulated output for application circuit:

  • Buck regulator with efficiency above 90%
  • Selectable output voltage between 0.6 V and 2.5 V
  • Output current up to 100mA

Thermal monitoring:

  • Battery protection against over-tempreture and under-tempreture during charging and discharging, independently

Power meter:

  • Measures how much energy has been transferred to the battery by each source and the energy drained from the battery to supply the application circuit

System configuration by GPIO or I2C communication:

  • All settings are dynamically configurable through GPIO or I2C (Fast Mode Plus)
  • System data is available through I2C

External 5 V charging capability:

  • Extra charging input for 5 V power supplies
  • CC/CV charging with configurable current limit in CC mode (max. 135 mA)
  • Provides a fast charging alternative when no source is available for a long time

Applications:

  • Remote Controls
  • eReader
  • PC Peripherals
  • Electronic Shelf Labels
  • Asset Tracking
  • Indoor Sensors
